Emergency Department Key Performance Indicators (KPI)

imageEmergency department KPIs put  are measures used to evaluate emergency department performance.  KPIs are developed to benchmark all public hospital emergency departments and to measure the “success” (or otherwise) of emergency department performance.

The KPI should be tracked on a daily basis and the results posted on the departmental gemba board and reviewed daily as part of the gemba walk. It is virtually impossible to track all KPI listed below simultaneously. The department should choose the most vital KPI to their operations and track them. As priorities shift, KPI should be chosen on the basis of what is relevant to operations at the time to ensure current priorities and problems are being addressed.

Following is a brief list of typical emergency department KPIs:

  • Patients seen and discharged within X hours (hospital to determine their standard)
  • Patients admitted from ED
  • Time to treatment
  • Patient satisfaction
  • Standard of care treatment
  • Correct diagnosis
  • ED occupancy/crowding
  • Time to treatment
  • ED LOS (length of stay)/wait
  • ED returns
  • Left Without Being Seen
  • Time to diagnosis
  • Effectiveness
  • Mortality
  • Time to pain management
  • Rate of complaints
  • Provider satisfaction
  • Waiting time
  • Time diagnostics to treatment
  • Time to diagnosis
  • Patient participation in own care
  • Satisfaction: pain control Satisfaction: hygiene
  • Triage vs. time to see provider
  • Staff safety

What Others Have Said…

Michael developed a LEAN program for our hospital. This involved training both managers and front line staff in LEAN and its application in every department. Two LEAN projects were conducted in an effort to reduce inventory. There was a reduction of $135,000 in pharmacy inventory and $200,000 reduction in OR inventory."
